Thieves, Assassins, and Sewers

Journal Notes – gather details to send to Spymaster.

Barnabas Blastwind and Sayeth Cromley invite Orange and Marymouse to go on the raid of Gralhund. Red says the rest of us should guard the sewer. Quiet and damp and boring down there. Until Candlekeep hears something and we chase after a man. I fell down. Page apologized – her magic put me to sleep. Candlekeep woke me up, but the sneaky guy got away.

Ystel Flackson – Luskan, broad and square man, short dark hair and a big sword.

Reports go out. Info comes in.

The Gralhunds say he and other Zhents were holding them hostage for months. The nimblewright took her necklace – family heirloom.

Spymaster – Very dangerous. Be careful. Don’t engage. Report.

Gotta convince the others to leave him be. Luskans – the beheader is Luskan, too. There’s a carnival ship in the harbor with Luskan tech and Nimblewrights – Captain Zardas Zord.

The carnival is quite fun. Lots of flyers to copy. Leaving soon, Page should come before they go. Lots of acts here for the Cabaret.

Guard hunting Zhents, Spymaster says stay low for now. New contact soon, keep training, keep watching.

Celebrations and Explosions

Spy Master,

Celebration Day was really fun. So many fun things to see and do. PageCat and I found new acts for the Cabaret!

Somebody blew people up outside our house! 11 people got blown up: an old woman, two men with swords – at least one of them with a Zhent tattoo, two women, a male half-elf, a dirty male gnome, and four halflings – two women and two men.

Candlekeep found a woman who said there was a puppet on a rooftop across the street when it happened. When the guard and inspector question us, they say that the dirty gnome was heading for the Cabaret.

Red said a kid saw a guy chasing the dirty gnome, and then stealing something from him before limping away very quickly. He thinks he was a Zhent, like the men with swords. Mary admits he took gems from the dead gnome, and Red takes them to see if he can find out who he was.

He also found a necklace of fireballs that was dropped by the puppet, I guess. The Big Guy says they sound like the puppets created by the Inspired Hands at the House of Gond for the Creation Parade. He and some of the others are going to go check it out.

This city is really strange. I’ve never seen puppets blow people up before.

Trouble in the North Ward

Spy Master,

The Order of the Gauntlet asked the Big Guy to go take care of some troubles in the North Ward. They were upset that some Zhentarim were paying gangs to attack suspected Xanathar Guild members. More upset, I think, that innocent people were getting hurt in the fighting. They wanted the Big Guy to go put a stop to it. Just stop a gang war, simple. So, he invited us to all go along.

A guy at the Sated Satyr, a satyr himself, in fact, told us there’d been fighting on Saltpork Street. Down on Saltpork, we almost get into such a fight, but the Big Guy pulls out money just in time. They tell us to go check out Twelve Dog Court. Down in the back corner of the court, we find a place called the Tinted Tin. The North Ward is pretty awful, Spy Master. It’s no wonder the people there will do anything for money.

The building, it’s not really a tavern, there’s no staff there, has eight guys inside. The Big Guy tries honesty again, but they all claim innocence. I notice a couple of them twitch though, at his words, and point them out to Catbard. She is really not subtle and tries to sit with them, following the around the room until one of them punches her. Then she sits nearby and a moment later, puts a glowing, flying snake on one of their backs. That’s all Orange needed, and the fight begins.

They were not very tough, Spy Master, but we don’t kill any of them, just knock them out. Page then robs them of a handful of coins. We check and make sure they have flying snake marks, and I give one or two that don’t Xanathar marks instead. The Big Guy wakes one of them up and Orange threatens him. Says that this paying gangs to hunt other gangs stops, and to tell his bosses the same. He agrees and Orange knocks him back out. We check the building and find swords and money upstairs, and take those, too.

The next day, Mary Mouseman gets a note from The Blackstaff, asking him and Orange to go up Mount Waterdeep to find someone named Halam. But mountain climbing seems pretty terrible, so I just go to work instead. That night, Red says he has a job and could use some back-up, so I go with him. Keeping an eye out, like you said, Spy Master, I don’t trust his patron to keep him safe like you do me.

Magic swords don’t make good guards, Spy Master. They can’t even see or hear anything. The warehouse was really boring, but I got a pretty blue shiny. I don’t think the men saw us. Well, okay, they did see us for a moment, but probably not well enough to identify us. I really have to get better at climbing and jumping again if I’m going to continue with this crew. I really hate heights, but I have to keep my new flock safe.

The Volo Job, Part One

Spy Master,

The Big Man had a big job today. Gathered up the Grunges, the Cat Bard, the Mouseman, and even Candlekeep. Said Volothamp Geddarm needed some work done and took us all to the Yawning Portal. It’s a strange place, Spy Master. Trolls and Stirges came right up out of a big whole in the middle of the room. But we helped the Barman put them down and he gave us free drinks.

Volo said that the Zhentarim and the Xanathar Guild have been fighting a gang war in the streets. The Grunges were interested in joining up, and did not seem to care which side. That’s not the problem though, Volo’s friend Floom Blagmar is missing, and maybe taken. From near the Skewered Dragon on Snail Street, two nights ago. He wants to pay us to find him, and everyone likes money, so we agree.

On the way down, we see half dozen corpses in the road, and three bloody men being arrested by the guards. I don’t look too closely, too much blood, but the others start mumbling about a flying snake tattoo and a semi-circle wheel tattoo. I think the flying snake is like yours, Spy Master, and they say the other is the Xanthar folk. Don’t worry, I didn’t tell them anything.

Down near the Skewered Dragon, there’s a shop with a giant, purple, stuffed eye monster in the window. I head for the tavern, but everyone else goes in the shop, so I close my eyes and followed them in. Everything is purple, everything. Even Xoblob, the gnome owner. Red starts buying stuff to get him to talk, and soon everyone is buying things. I even found a tiny book of ship manifests with the most interesting names.

Xoblob tells us that Floom was with another guy who looked just like him, and they got attacked by a group of men right outside the tavern. One of the men had a flying snake tattoo on his neck, but Xoblob didn’t stick around to see what happened.

We head to the tavern, and spread out to talk with folk. Floom’s friend was Daggult Neverember’s son Renaer. The men that attacked them had been inside the tavern and followed them out. There’s a warehouse up on Candle Lane with a flying snake on the door, some old drunk told us, so we head out.

It isn’t hard to find, and the street is fairly quiet. Red jumps up top to take a look, but only found an upper storage room. He and Orange decide to do something called Plan Haunted Doll. Red and Cat Bard head up to the Roof and the rest of us head around back. Orange and Candlekeep want to get through the gate to the back door so we can go in at the right time, but they make a terrible noise getting the chain off.

No one comes running out to stop us, so we sneak in. I stay well back from these noisy men. The Big Man’s steps are so loud, and Mouseman has a Construct with him! There’s a weird voice coming from inside, and Orange says it’s time to go in. He and Candlekeep head in first, and get jumped almost immediately. There’s a lot of fighting then, and too much dying.

When it stops, there are twelve dead Zhentarims that we didn’t kill, and seven dead Kenku that we did, and one still alive Kenku that Red questions. His name is Click Switch, and Red offers to join the Xanathar Guild, because they took out all the Zhents, and fought so well. Click Switch tells him what their orders were: Follow the Yellow Signs in the Sewers, Tie Up the Pretty Boy in the Back Room, Get him to the Boss.

We split up then, Cat Bard, Orange, and I go upstairs and the others search downstairs. We find some paintings and some silver, and I get two more proper manifests to add to my collection off the boxes. When we get back down, they’ve pulled a guy out of a back room. Says his name is Ranaer and the half orcs took Floom by mistake. Then the City Guard arrive, but Ranaer says he’ll deal with them.
