Solo Mission

In the morning, we all gather together to talk about the party. When I come down, Red’s asking Nevi about a magic dagger. Then Red says he heard that the third stone might be in play. He says the Cassalanter’s, those demon worshippers whose tomb we robbed all those months ago, that they might have it. We talk about checking out their place, finding out if they have other properties, and what other ways we can investigate. But there’s a knock at the door.

That mage from the Bard College job is here, looking for Red. He goes out and I listen. The guy says Red stole his dagger at the party last night. I don’t remember seeing him there, and Red says he just found it, and is glad to return it to him. But the man says Red is under arrest and takes him away. Page messages him, but he says he’s fine and keep on task.

Red had a plan. We have to stick to it. Marr Mouse and the Big Guy are going to go look at property records. Page and I are going to go scout the house from the street. Orange and Nevi are going to go check out the sewers for a way in from below.

Page makes us invisible and we go check it out. There’s a big fence all around, and three different buildings. A stable, a guest house, and a big mansion. The buildings all back up to the fence, though, that should make it fairly easy going. There’s lots of guards though, going to have to be real careful. Guards on the gate and the doors, and wandering around the lawns. We head back to the Cabaret before her spell wears off and check in with the others.

Mary Mouse and Svetel say they own a couple of other places, but not really. They invest in other businesses, but don’t run them or something. They mostly trade in spices and other goods, but it’s all old business, that went bad some time ago. Then things went bad for one of their rivals more recently, and they got back on top. Orange and Nevi say there’s no way in through the sewers, just tiny drainage pipes coming out. Only a real mouse could get in that way. So, Page and I go back in the night, to see what changes after dark.

There are a lot more guards at night, but no one goes in or out. In the morning, all the guards leave when a new set of guards arrive. And a couple servants go out to the guest house to clean it up, even though it doesn’t seem like anyone was in there to begin with. When we get home, Page checks on Red again, and he says it’s just a matter of due process, so she and I get some sleep while the others investigate more.

When we get up, everyone’s back, and there’s not really any news on the Stone. So, I decide I have to go inside. Red said to investigate, to not wait for him. This is what he would do. Everyone starts talking about spells they can cast on me to help. They can make me invisible, faster, smarter, wiser, slipperier, and healthier. I can pull my shadows around me, and I can teleport short distances now, to get in and out.

We all head over through the sewers. A few blocks away, they all cast their spells and then take up positions to watch for guard movement. I head up and shadowstep up to a third floor window. It has shutters, but I easily get them open. The room is dark, but I can just see inside, and step into the shadows on the other side of the glass. Too dark, I pop darkvision up and look around.

It’s a big bedroom, with dressers and armoires. There seems to be someone in an adjoining room in one direction, so I slip the other way. This room is lit up, a library. I really want to go through all the books, but there’s one really big and creepy out set out. It looks scary, and it’s open, so that must be the important one. I pop it into the bag I borrowed from Nevi. There’s a ladder up to a trapdoor, so I have to go up.

The trapdoor is really heavy, but I get it open and slip inside. There’s just a single candle on a stool here. It smells like sulfur and there’s screaming from the other side of a door. I don’t like that sound, so I wedge the trapdoor open a little bit. There are some big spiders on either side of the door. I wonder if the candle means anything, so I pick it up and bring it to the door. Nothing happens. It is very locked, so I reach out to unlock it and the spiders start talking. They say I shouldn’t open the door. They say it’s really dangerous inside. I make a picture of the stone we found and ask if they’ve seen it. They haven’t. I need to see if it’s inside, so I unlock the door anyway. The spiders don’t like that and they attack me, but they aren’t spiders anymore, they’re little imps, from some of the books I’ve been reading. So, I squish them. Now I’m not invisible anymore. Page messages me, but I tell her everything’s okay. Can’t stop now.

When I open the door, the sound gets really loud, so I rush back and close the trapdoor. No one seems to have heard it, so back I go. Inside is something awful. A devil with all sorts of chains on him. He’s in the center of a circle and he’s howling. He looks really sad and trapped and sick? Like they trapped him here and are hurting him. I get him to calm down a little, and try to ask him about the stone. He wants me to get closer to him. I ask him to promise to help me. He just keeps saying closer, and he won’t promise. So, I look around the room more. Behind him is a mannequin with a sailor’s uniform, and a picture of a young man. It looks like a shrine to their son lost at sea. Did they really lose him? Did they turn him into this thing and then trap it here? I really want to let him free, but I’m pretty sure he would eat me, he looks so hungry.

I go back down. To the Library, closing the door and trapdoor behind me. I slip back into the bedroom, but someone is in there now. A tiefling woman, who seems to be cleaning. I slip past her, into the sitting room and out into the hallway. There’s a room across the hall, but I can hear someone in there, so I head downstairs.

There’s a ballroom here. With a mannequin in the center of it, all dressed up. That’s creepy. There’s a banquet hall, and a music room, and a small kitchen on the second floor, too, but nothing that looks like it would hide the stone. I head downstairs again, but there’s voices now. Guards at the bottom of the stairs. Everything is so well lit down here, and I’m not invisible. I can’t get past them.

I head back upstairs, and out onto the terrace around the ballroom. There are some birds up here, but I think I can get to the guest house if I go around the building. I sneak around and shadow step across to a window on the guest house. There are more ravens over here. They’re looking at me. How can they see me? No time. I slip inside again, through the shadows. The guest rooms are all empty. There’s nothing here. It’s taking too long, time to go. When I get out, there are even more ravens, but I just jump out over the fence and take off home. I tell the others it’s over. Pretty sure I’m going to need to hide in Skullport for a while.

At home, I give over the big scary book, and write down what I found in the attic. Maybe that will be enough for the Blackstaff to investigate them. Worship is okay, but is holding a devil prisoner allowed? I hope not. That poor devil was in horrible shape. Orange is still on about the brain eater, so we suggest asking the Dustsweepers about any weird sewer reports to try and track him down. Then it’s time for bed. I’m going to have to sneak down below in the morning, but I need to sleep right now.

A Plot, A Party, and A Pretty Drow

Everyone came down to the Restaurant to have lunch with Red and me. Orange says he found a guy with his brain eaten out at the Yawning Portal. He says it’s happening all over town. He got a new ax that made him promise to kill the monster responsible. It’s weird to make promises to weapons, but Orange never does anything normal. He says it’s the Xanathar mind eater that we met right back at the beginning. Red tells him good luck. Killing that guy is going to be an awful long quest. I think Orange was hoping Red would help him, but Red seems scared of the guy, or crossing The Boss.

Catbard, she’s not a page of a book, this is a page of a book. But I guess she’d rather I call her that. Strange Catbard. In love with a guy who lives inside her ring, and has a fancy palace full of air and bright loveliness. Page is someone else’s book. Like always.

Page asked Red and me to go to a party with her. She says she needs help finding spies there. It’s a really fancy party, so we go get some new fancy clothes. I get a pretty blue dress with sparkles on it. Not good for sneaking, but good for blending in at a fancy party. As much as this little bird can, anyway. I make up some new business cards, too. No one’s hired me in a long time. I don’t know how much longer this group is going to last. Flock may be family, but those stones, or that sea goddess could ruin it all.

It’s a really nice party, and I reconnect with some old clients and meet a few new. Cat… Page picked up a few acts for the cabaret. Red does what Red does. Then, about halfway into the night, Page threw champagne into some guy’s face. He played it off and started to leave, but we, and Mert, all followed him. Red and I went up on the roof, while Page and Mert followed him more directly. He says something about hiding a peacock, and Page says she wants to see. Then he was suddenly a drow in a big feathered hat and an eyepatch. Is he a Pirate? He says his name is Jarlaxle, and Mert seems to know him. Then he disappeared! I guess it wasn’t a big deal he was there, because we went back inside to enjoy the rest of the party.

Umberlee’s Temple

Sea ghosts are really scary! They killed Orange right away when he rushed down to fight them. I grabbed him, though, and got him back to the Big Guy. We all fight them off and get inside as quickly as we can. It’s a really strange tower with really dark stone stuff. Nevi says it’s not natural.

Red leads us down and around until there’s a weird demonic bust at the end of the tunnel. He went up to it and got zapped real hard. He zips over to it and pops its eyes out. Then leads us on and to the right. There’s pictures of the sea goddess down this way. And a door that’s not a door. No one can figure out how to open it. Nevi says the water holds it closed. So, back we go.

There’s a weird statue of a lady here. She looks real scared, and Red says the stone feels weird at the top. Nevi takes a look and says its got an awful lot of magic on it. There are a couple matching magics on the wall, too. Some kind of secret door. Big Guy dispels the magic on the lady, while I stand by with a water breathing potion. She doesn’t need it though, she relaxes and then withers and dies. I guess she had been there a long time.

The door opens to a big round room. There’s a big drain hole in the center of the room. The water tastes like blood in here. Fish people and sharks come swarming up the hole and our Dragon Friend breathes on all of them. The room is a lot bloodier now, so we quickly swim through and down the hole. Red keeps us from tripping traps as we go. One of the tubes was all full of them.

The next big room is full of seaweeds and other plants. The water is warm and salty in here. It’s like a fish tank inside the temple. Some fish people swim over and they warn us against going any further. They aren’t going to stop us, though. There are other creatures here, though, creepy weird looking fish people that do try. Sharks and sea spawn, except the sharks weren’t really, they were hags. But it didn’t matter, we smashed them all. The nice fish people came back then, saying they’re leaving the temple, but to beware the Guardian of the temple. Orange talks to them about gods and the Wall, and they head out. We start taking bets on what the guardian is. Kraken, Dragon Turtle (Orange says that’s not real), or something else.

Deeper and warmer paths lead us down to a big ugly face of a door with a portcullis. We slip into a massive dark chamber. Big voice comes to all of us, calling us juicy morsels. Says we’re not the first. I don’t like this big voice or this darkness. But light comes then, brightening up the room and showing more pictures of the Umberlee goddess. There’s a huge pile of treasure below us, and it’s moving.

Red was right, a Dragon Turtle it is! That thing is HUGE! And its breath hurts an awful lot. And its shell is so hard. I spent a lot of time unconscious in the water, which is extra frightening. But Catbard called her genie and Dragon Friend was really helpful. Eventually, I wake up and it’s cracked all apart. We loot really quickly, but it’s getting awfully hot in here. The genie takes most of us away to the Air plane, but Dragon Friend and Red stay behind for more loot and get away together.

Next day we meet back up outside the city and divide up the loot. Red tells Dragon Friend to stay away from the water. The Sea Queen has already sent raging storms to Waterdeep. The storms last a really long time, but we got lots of money and some really pretty items. I got a new staff and belt. Catbard got a new ring she seemed really happy about. Now we have to lay low until the storm blows over.

The Flint Forge Gang

One of my contacts gets me information on the contract on Catbard, but not sure how to tell Red. He seemed to get the same, or similar information, though, so maybe I don’t have to. He wants to check out the hideout of the Flint Forge gang. Says they’re down below Skullport, in Undermountain. That sounds like scary fun. We go investigate the people first. They have some assassins, a war cleric, a druid, and lots of goblins and animals to defend them.

So, we go for a sneak. They have a really cool base. It’s built right into the stone wall. It’s made of dark iron and obsidian. It’s three stories tall and has no windows, just a couple doors. One of them is way up high. There’s goblins, bats, and even a cyclops out front. We meet some fire lizards on the way out and Red gives them food to leave us alone.

The gang figured out we were looking for them and sent Red a note, asking for a meeting. I get him to take Orange along so we don’t get outnumbered too badly. He says if a fight breaks out, I’m supposed to run. I’m good at running, but there’s no way Orange would run. Fortunately, they don’t want a fight. They offer to replace our puppies, saying the dead learned their lesson. They offer Red a few flying spider eggs. This sounds awful to me, but it’s Red’s business, and he agrees.

We spend the rest of the month getting ready for our temple raid in the Bay. I get a bunch of diamond necklaces for folks because Red said that’s how you save people. Nevi makes me a ring for swimming, and cloaks for most everybody else, but I really like my cloak.

Out on the Bay, Dragon Friend makes us all able to breathe water, and then makes us a big Feast. Right there in our boat. Says it’ll make us more Heroic. Then we all dive in and start the swim down to Umberlee’s Temple.

Flying is Bad

Red promised to get some flowers, so they decided to Wind Walk across to the Moonshea Islands. Me, him, and Catbard with her genie. I do not like it, but you can fall as mist. Or at least I thought so. I stayed low anyway, feels so weird to be mist. But then the spell ran out and I did fall, in the Ocean! Without my ring because it’s not done yet! Red swam over and pulled out a boat for me, and we all made it to shore on a tiny, tiny island.

In the morning, Red says it’s a whale, not an island. Oceans are so weird. There’s a storm coming, but we fly right towards it. Into it, until Catbard remembers we wanted to go above it. So we fly up. I really hate it. There are only clouds below me and sky above. It feels awful! I’m not supposed to be here. What if I fall from way up here. Swish Poof indeed!

Catbard does better this time, gets us down to an island before we fall. It’s not really an island, but a shipwreck, but close enough. Catbard talks to some ghosts, but I just go to sleep. When I wake up again, Red is giving her a skull and she talks to the ghosts again. She says they can rest now. We can’t though, more flying.

We get to the islands today, up into the mountains. Red’s really good at finding plants. There are so many pretty plants here. He teases her about always giving the genie a bottle of wine. Says she’s gotta be more creative if she wants him. She says she’s going to run away with him to his Air plane. Stupid genie. I get her some flowers while she’s sleeping. I don’t want her to go. She likes them, but the asks if she can give them to the stupid genie.

Then she summons him, but doesn’t give him my flowers. He says we should come home with him, and he’ll take us back tomorrow. Easier than trying to fly again. I guess that’s true. So, we go to his huge palace on an air plane. I guess it’s nice. It feels weird. Not bad weird. Kind of good weird, but I don’t like him. He’s mean to Orange and he’s going to take her away. He does get us home the next morning. Well, close enough. We have to walk into town a bit.
